- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter cold and cubed
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk warm
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Optional: fruit preserves or cream cheese for filling
In a bowl, combine warm milk and yeast; let it sit for 5 minutes.
In another bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt.
Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in the yeast mixture, egg, and vanilla.
Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth.
Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
Cut into squares and add your choice of filling in the center.
Fold the corners to the center and pinch to seal.
Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes until golden.
