Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter cold and cubed
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk warm
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: fruit preserves or cream cheese for filling

Instructions
 

  • In a bowl, combine warm milk and yeast; let it sit for 5 minutes.
  • In another bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt.
  • Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in the yeast mixture, egg, and vanilla.
  • Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  • Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  • Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  • Cut into squares and add your choice of filling in the center.
  • Fold the corners to the center and pinch to seal.
  • Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes until golden.
